School Uniforms

Subject: School Uniforms
Audience: The Principal of Francis Lewis high school
Purpose: Persuade the audience why our school needs school uniforms
Speaker: High school student

As a high school student of Francis Lewis, I believe that our school should enforce the use of school uniforms. School uniforms offer great benefits, such as increase safety within our community. According to Dona Riley, an expert in the study of schools and students, the result of school uniform requirement led to a decrease in fights by  “51 percent in grades K-8." (Riley, pg 1) Furthermore, uniforms can reduce the amount of nonacademic distractions in our school. As a student who has had worn uniforms during my middle school years, I can assure that school uniforms can help students stay focused in our studies instead of our looks. During my years in junior high school, students in my class did not have to worry about looking different or getting distracted by what others are wearing. Now that I am in a high school that does not require students to wear school uniforms, I often see peers that are stressed by what they should wear to school. Students in our school are judged and treated differently depending on their appearance. I see students who are sleep deprived because they are worrying about what they should wear the next day instead of going to bed.

However, many may disagree that  our school should require uniforms because of the time and dedication that staffs have to put in to make sure that the students follow the dress code. Although this requires a lot of time and effort, in the long run, the staffs of our school will benefit from this because there will be  less phone calls that teachers will have to make and less detention slips that teachers will have to write. So, would you rather create a community in which everyone is happy or would you rather continue to see your fellow colleagues deal with arguments ad violence instead of focusing on helping students like me succeed in the future?

  1. I like how you established ethos by using your credentials as a student and from personal experiences. You used logos by supporting your claim with credited facts and statistics. I like the way you used pathos in your writing to make readers sympathize with the students who are stressed and sleep deprived.
I really liked your topic because it was very relatable as a person who prefers uniforms and has difficulty picking out what to wear for school. I like how you included many reasons to support the main idea of your writing.

  2. I though your whole speech as a whole was convincing. Not only did you have yourself as a first person viewer of uniform vs no uniform, but you used statistic to justify a pro of uniform in school. I also like the way you used pathos to make the reader feel sorry for the students that get bullied or treated differently in school.

  3. Throughout the speech I enjoyed how you presented ethos and logos. When you stated that you were a student and gave us the insight about your experiences without uniforms, it made your reasoning believable and reliable. The quote from Dona Riley assisted the speech by giving insight from an expert on the topic of school uniforms. I liked how you concluded the speech, "So, would you rather create a community in which everyone is happy or would you rather continue to see your fellow colleagues deal with arguments ad violence instead of focusing on helping students like me succeed in the future?" This really made me think about the issue through a student's perspective and left me on a feeling of "I should really do something".

  4. I like how you established ethos by introducing your title as a student. In addition, you include the fact that you have also wore school uniforms as a personal anecdote in which establishes pathos and helps the reader be able to relate to your topic (if the reader were a student). In addition, introducing a counter-claim and then refuting afterwards strengthened your argument as it shut down possible opposing points of view against your claim. Last but not least, you establish logos through a quote by Dona Riley with statistics on the percent decrease in fights due to the presence of school uniforms.

I find your topic unique as it isn't one I was expecting anyone to write about. From my personal experience, I never really likes wearing a school uniform as I felt like I blended in with everyone else and I wanted to be my own person. However, your argument makes me want to consider wearing uniforms again as my opinion against them is not of much importance when compared to the benefits of doing so.
